A PACT TO LEARN ABOUT OUR MOST IMPORTANT NATURAL CAPITAL

Because the sea makes up 90 percent of the biosphere and our living space and covers 71 percent of the Earth's surface. It absorbs nearly half of carbon dioxide emissions and sequesters 90% of the atmosphere's heat. Only 5% of the ocean floor has been explored and less than 10% of the oceans are protected. There is no real widespread awareness of the importance of its protection as humanity's common and indivisible heritage.

A PACT FOR A SUSTAINABLE SEA ECONOMY "ON A HUMAN SCALE"

Because the sea is a huge source of wealth. The estimated market value of marine and coastal resources and industries corresponds to about 5 percent of global GDP. The Covenant aims to put itself forward as a reference point for the promotion of an economic culture of the sea that is truly "people-friendly" and capable of sustainable growth.

A PACT FOR THE FOOD OF THE EARTH

Because the sea is the answer to the global demand for food. Already, 1.2 billion people in the world live exclusively using marine resources, but the sea can feed a third of the world's population if it can combine fishing, aquaculture and biodiversity conservation. The future of food from the sea passes through good, healthy and equitable ecosystem-based management that takes into account the biological recovery times of natural marine reserves.

A PACT FOR THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY OF THE SEA

We need to develop a systemic and circular strategy that preserves it and allows it to regenerate over time, to transform "marine garbage," starting with plastics, into new materials and new job opportunities, to transform and recycle marine infrastructure, and to incentivize sustainable decommissioning.

A PACT TO PROTECT THE BIODIVERSITY OF THE SEA

Because we are a consequence of the sea. Knowledge, protection and conservation of marine life and biodiversity are the main goals to be pursued to safeguard human well-being. We must act now and be aware that organisms living in the seas and oceans play a key role in the balance of the biosphere and in mitigating the effects of climate change and can slow the effects of global warming.

A PACT BECAUSE THE SEA CANNOT BE THE DUMPING GROUND FOR OUR WASTE

Because all the problems of the sea come from the land. The effects of pollution and the impact of waste dumped into the sea negatively affect the health of the entire natural ecosystem. The Covenant aims to promote awareness of all those good practices that can reduce environmental impact.

A PACT FOR RENEWABLE AND EQUITABLE ENERGY

The sea can provide equitable, renewable, and unlimited energy with wind, sun, and currents. Clean and easily accessible energy that is eco-friendly with marine biodiversity and fair to all communities and businesses that need it. It can do this for small and large communities and in a fully eco-friendly way.

A PACT TO PROVIDE WATER FOR TOMORROW'S AGRICULTURE

The sea contains 98 percent of water can easily be desalinated by providing potable or irrigable water to support agriculture and nature by helping them mitigate the impact of climate change and water crisis.

A PACT TO FUND RESEARCH

Because we need to learn about the sea and the Covenant is intended to be the reference point for studying the problems and solutions needed for the economy system, identifying and proposing concrete actions for the environment, coastal waters the ports.

A PACT FOR THE NEW ECOLOGY OF THE SEA

Because the pact aims to develop shared strategies to achieve the goals made explicit by the 11 descriptors of the Marine Strategy by which the European Commission promotes the achievement of good ecological status of marine ecosystems for sustainable development of the planet.

A PACT WITH BUSINESSES FOR A NEW SEA ECONOMY

Because the sea is a producer of ecosystem goods and services and a vast territory for the development of multiple sectors. Thanks to the sea, many companies can strengthen the competitive factors of doing and being "good" enterprise, achieve the goals of sustainable development.

A PACT FOR THE ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION OF ENTERPRISES
